The Synthesis
Story points are a unit of effort estimation in agile development. Unlike time estimates, story points are relative: a 5-point story takes roughly twice as long as a 2-point story. For PMs, story points enable velocity tracking (points completed per sprint) and capacity planning. The Fibonacci sequence (1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13) is commonly used to reflect increasing uncertainty at larger scales.
Metaphysical Foundation
Story points are a relative measure of complexity. They acknowledge that estimation is inherently uncertain.
Evolutionary Path
From time-based estimates to story points to #NoEstimates, estimation practices have evolved toward acknowledging uncertainty.
